How to Clean a Himalayan Salt Lamp

Himalayan salt lamps are versatile, beautiful and when properly cared for; they can last a lifetime. The biggest challenge with salt lamps is that they draw moisture. It’s important not to use them in wet areas or outdoors. When humidity is high, you may notice your lamp feels damp. You can wipe it dry with a soft cloth or simply turn it on for a couple of hours to evaporate the moisture.

Lamps that are going to be left sitting unused can be covered with a protective cover to prevent excessive dust buildup. A paper bag or cloth covering is fine, avoid plastic as it can hold in moisture and humidity.

If you use your lamp regularly, not much is required to clean it. When lit, the lamps generate negative ions that clean the air and naturally repel dust. When necessary, a simple wipe down with a lightly dampened lint-free towel will do. After cleaning, light it for a couple of hours to ensure it’s fully dry.

If you have the type of salt lamp that is a basket with several chunks of salt, turn the pieces regularly to prevent dust buildup and test for moisture. When salt lamps get moist, the salt will start to crystallize. If you notice this, take care to move the lamp to a dryer area or use it more regularly to dry it out.

More important than cleaning the lamps, are how the lamps clean the air for you! Many homes have up to five times more pollution than outdoors. The negative ions emitted by salt lamps naturally attract pollutants with a positive ion charge and neutralize them, helping you breathe easier. This relieves allergies and congestion without the need for high priced machines.

If you have ever walked outside right after a rain, or taken a stroll down the beach and felt instantly refreshed and energized, that was the result of the negative ion charge in the air. Salt lamps can bring those benefits indoors to your home or work space, making it easier to focus. Himalayan salt lamps are a cost-effective and beautiful way to purify the air. They add a soft, warm glow and soothing ambiance wherever they are lit.
